Summary
When one Alexander Augustus Hope thunders into the legendary Lake District with his brilliantly caparisoned coach and four, the locals are charmed, deeply impressed and all too anxious to do his bidding. They cannot know that he is in reality bigamist, forger, jailbird adveturer John Hatfield, fearful of vengeance and a remarkably ironic and self-aware man for all his greed and lust.
